Vegan Eggnog Review: Which plant-based eggnog is the best?

Okay, full disclosure, I was never a fan of eggnog before becoming vegan. The idea of raw eggs in a milky drink just grossed me out - even though I ate eggs and dairy all the time.

But, now that I know my eggnog doesn’t contain either eggs or milk, I honestly can’t get enough of it! Sweet and creamy and cinnamon-nutmeggy goodness is everything I could want on a chilly winter night!

A few years ago, vegan eggnog was a brand new thing, but now we’re spoiled for choice! So, to help you decide which one to give a try to, I did a little taste test and enlisted my husband in the task too. He’s always loved eggnog (yes, the real stuff) so we compared his eggnog against the the plant-based ones I picked up. We tested Beatrice 2% premium eggnog vs Califia Farms Holiday Nog, Earth’s Own Almond Nog and So Delicious Coconut Holiday Nog.

The first thing you’ll notice is how different they all look. Califia is quite yellow, while the Earth’s Own very white; no eggy colour at all. The So Delicious falls in the middle, but also has pleasant specks of cinnamon in it.

Earth’s Own is also very thin; it basically just looks like partial-skimmed milk. The almond milk base means it has less fat than the coconut base, but, because it’s so light, it tastes especially sweet with no fat to balance the sugar. It tastes like eggnog, but the almond notes are also very strong and nutty. However, I think it’s decent especially for mixing into coffee or cocktails.

Califia (also an almond milk base) was the best colour; in fact it is basically indistinguishable from real eggnog. However, the taste was truly awful. It didn’t even taste edible, let alone like eggnog. This one was a hard pass for me. However, if you are just photographing it, it worked wonderfully. But don’t put it in your mouth.

My favourite of this test was the So Delicious brand. It was a little lighter in colour than the Califia, but still had a more eggy look than the bright white Earth’s Own. Because it’s coconut milk based, it also has a bit more fat, and thus, creaminess. As I mentioned, the thing I liked best about the appearance was the little flecks of nutmeg and/or cinnamon you can see in it - it looked really appealing to me. There is a hint of a coconut taste, but I would say the flavour is pretty spot on, and definitely the closest of the three.
